AnyLogic alternatives: what you are replacing decides
AnyLogic is the only widely used multi-method tool: discrete-event simulation, agent-based modelling and system dynamics in one model, plus GIS maps. If you only use the discrete-event part, Simul8, Arena, FlexSim, Simio or Plant Simulation offer equivalent depth with less programming. If you only model agents, NetLogo, Mesa, Repast or GAMA suffice — all open source. If you code, SimPy or Salabim replaces both. If you compute administrative processes and need a number in money, a lean decision instrument gets there faster. First: which part do you use?
AnyLogic is expensive and demanding because it does three things in one model. Most users use one of them. Before comparing, work out which:

The last row is meant seriously: if your question is genuinely multi-method — a supply chain with autonomous actors, commuter flows, evacuations, spread models with capacity limits — there is no equivalent substitute. Switching then means splitting the model across two tools, which loses exactly the interaction you needed.
The four usual reasons to switch
1. Java. Anything beyond the standard blocks is programmed. For teams with development experience that is a strength; for process organisations without it, it is the wall models stall against.
2. The learning edition does not carry. The Personal Learning Edition is free but explicitly not for commercial use, with limits on model size and export. For client work or decision papers it is not a route.
3. Over-specification. If you only compute queues, you are paying for methodological breadth that never gets used — and operating an interface designed for three paradigms.
4. Time to result. Two to four weeks to a first defensible model of your own is normal in this class. If the decision is due next week, no tool in this class helps.
If you only need discrete events

FlexSim — strong 3D representation, material and warehouse logic.
Simio — object-based, with agent-based elements and built-in risk analysis. Of those listed, the closest to AnyLogic's way of thinking without its methodological breadth.
Plant Simulation — the greatest depth for manufacturing design, sensible in a Siemens environment.
If you only model agents
Here the open-source world is strong, with no compromise on method:
- NetLogo — the lingua franca of agent-based modelling, extremely quick to learn, with a huge model library. Limit: very large models with millions of agents get slow.
- Mesa (Python) — agent-based inside the Python ecosystem, easy to combine with analytics and data processing.
- Repast (Java/Python) — for large, distributed models with heavy compute demands.
- GAMA — strong for spatial and GIS-adjacent models; the obvious answer if you used AnyLogic mainly for the maps.
If your team codes
SimPy and Salabim (both Python) replace the discrete part entirely and cost no licence. What you take on: distribution choice, warm-up period, replication count, confidence intervals — and the fact that nobody outside the team reads the model.
For combining agents and queues you can wire Mesa and SimPy together, but that is bespoke work. What AnyLogic sells here is precisely the saving of that bespoke work.
If what you actually need is a decision
A common case in consultancies and process organisations: AnyLogic was bought because it was the most powerful tool available, and it is used to show that an automation pays off. For that it is over-specified.
A lean decision instrument computes on the same principle — discrete events, Monte Carlo repetition, P10–P90 instead of point values — omits transport logic and experiment designs, and delivers a before/after in money within half an hour. The limit is equally clear: for facility design, agents or maps it is the wrong tool.

What switching really costs
Not the licence but the remodelling: an interchange format for simulation models effectively does not exist, and with AnyLogic your own Java code is tied to the tool environment on top of that. Count your maintained models before you calculate. Beyond a handful, the switch is itself a project.
